Tor: anonymity online

Tor is a network of virtual tunnels that allows people and groups to improve their privacy and security on the Internet. It also enables software developers to create new communication tools with built-in privacy features. Tor provides the foundation for a range of applications that allow organizations and individuals to share information over public networks without compromising their privacy.

Individuals use Tor to keep websites from tracking them and their family members, or to connect to news sites, instant messaging services, or the like when these are blocked by their local Internet providers. Tor's hidden services let users publish web sites and other services without needing to reveal the location of the site. Individuals also use Tor for socially sensitive communication: chat rooms and web forums for rape and abuse survivors, or people with illnesses.

How to change the Vista folder template

How to change the Vista folder template

Vista tries to determine what types of files you have in a folder and display them according to the file type. For example, if Vista thinks the files are photos, it will display them as thumbnails with columns for name, date taken, tags, etc. But sometimes it has a hard time figuring it out and uses the wrong template. You can easily change that by following these steps:

1. Right click the folder and select Properties.
2. Click the Customize tab.
3. In the drop-down box under "Use this folder type as a template," select the type of items you have in the folder (for example, Documents). You can also choose whether to apply the template to all the subfolders within the folder.

You can also set a default for all new folders to be displayed without a template by editing the registry. Here's how:

1. Start the Registry Editor
2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Classes \ Local Settings \ Software Microsoft \ Windows \ Shell \ Bags
3. From the menu, click Edit > New > Key
4. Name the new key AllFolders (and keep this key selected)
5. From the menu, click Edit > New > Key
6. Name the new key Shell (and keep this key selected)
7. From the menu, click Edit > New > String Value
8. Name the new value FolderType, right-click it and choose Modify. Enter NotSpecified as the Value data
9. Close the registry editor

Ignorance vs. Stupidity: Yes, There Is A Difference

Ignorance vs. Stupidity: Yes, There Is A Difference: "“Ignorance is not knowing. Stupidity is knowing and doing it anyway.” In other words, ignorance has to do with a simple lack of knowledge or education, but stupidity results when a person already possesses the necessary knowledge, yet continues to engage in behaviors that are patently illogical."

Make Sense of Confusing Twitter Hash Tags

Make Sense of Confusing Twitter Hash Tags REFERENCE only, for Tweeters and propheads.

Listening in a Digital Age

Listening in a Digital Age: "Listening in a Digital Age" The key is to create, either on your own or through a paid service, a dashboard that delivers the conversations surrounding topics of interest right to your inbox or browser as part of your measurement suite of analytics.

Your do it yourself toolbox should include:

* Google alerts - Google Alerts allows you set-up customer searches for any phase and receive email or RSS alerts any time your phrase shows up in online media, blogs, web pages and news.
* Search.twitter - For now, monitoring twitter is a separate stream (Google seems to be adding twitter conversations to SERPs) - using the advanced search function allows you set-up very specific searches, even including geographic details. These searches produce RSS feeds and can then be subscribed to.
* tweetbeep.com - Similar to Google Alerts, but for twitter. Set-up search phrases and receive notification any time your phrases show up in twitter conversations.
* Boardtracker.com - focuses on the most popular bulletin board conversations and can turn up responses that don’t show up anywhere else. Some industries still have very heavy bulletin board use.
* Backtype.com - Backtype is a search engine of sorts that focuses on blog comments. Blog comments don’t often make it into the mainstream search results so this is a way to listen in on this set of content.
* Social Mention - this is a mashup search engine of many of the formats of content such as audio and video - I’ve found it a very nice way to turn up some mentions that don’t occur anywhere else.

CPSC Recall Announcements and Product Safety AlertsI was reminded to check recalls of various items when I saw about a dozen recalls on the bulletin board at Wally World this morning. It's amazing how many items are recalled, and it probably is a reminder to send in your warranty card when you buy something so they can find you. Are You Getting Gouged On Line?

Everyone knows that shopping online can save you a lot of money. From kitchen utensils to giant flat screen TVs, you can often find a better price at Amazon or some other Internet retailer than at a local "bricks and mortar" store. Their overhead is lower since they aren't paying a bunch of expensive salespeople and maintaining a nice storefront, and payment processing is less expensive since it's automated. The customer gets a better price and the business still makes money.

The same thing goes for doing other business online. The Internet has changed the entire bill-paying process. I remember that my grandparents usually paid their bills in person. Even with the water bill or electric bill, they would go down to city hall or the nearest payment office, usually with cash, and hand over the money to a clerk. They liked that they immediately got a receipt as proof of payment, and didn't have to trust the post office to get it there on time.

My mom and dad, on the other hand, paid almost all of their bills by mail. Twice a month, dad would sit down with the checkbook and write out all the checks, address and stamp all the envelopes, and trek down to the post office or just leave them in our home mailbox to be picked up. Those were the days when your mailbox was on your front porch, not out at the curb where any and everyone could steal your mail. Dad believed that the Postal Service really lived up to its motto - "the mail must go through" - and back then, for the most part, they did. He was satisfied with his cancelled check as proof that he'd paid, even though it took a while before he got it back.

Today, many of us rarely ever write a check. We pay with credit or debit cards or authorize automatic bank withdrawals. I know some folks who never carry cash. We sit at home (or in a hotel room hundreds or thousands of miles away from home), log onto our computers, and pay our bills without having to write checks, buy stamps or use gasoline. Due date is tomorrow? No problem (at least with many accounts) - there's still plenty of time to pay it and avoid late charges.

Meanwhile, the payee doesn't have to worry about whether your check is good, and doesn't have to pay someone to do the time-consuming work of processing a hand written check. It's more convenient for them, it's more convenient for you, and everybody saves a little money. It's a win-win situation. Except when it's not.

There's one bill that I don't pay online; when it comes to my water bill, I still mail in a check even though the city has an online payment option. Why? Because they charge a ridiculous $2.50 processing fee for online payments. My electric company, gas company, credit card company and others that I pay online charge nothing extra to do so. A couple of times, with various one-time bill payments, I have run into minimal processing fees, on the order of 25 or 50 cents. The whole idea of online payments is that it automates things and makes it less expensive, so why is the city charging a premium to use their system? Is it because they think the people who would pay online probably have more discretionary income and therefore won't mind getting hit up for a little extra? Did they contract with some service to handle the processing and they're getting charged this fee to do it and passing it on to the customer? I don't know, but I know I'm not paying it.

Speaking of getting gouged, when I pay all those other bills online, I do it by credit card (except, of course, for the credit card bill itself). One reason to use a credit card is to get the cash-back rewards (it goes without saying that you also need to pay off the balance of the card at the end of every month so you don't get charged interest). But there's another reason: I've heard too many horror stories from people who authorized automatic payments directly from their banks, and then were unable to stop those payments when they cancelled the service. A friend of mine found that six months after cancelling a membership, the company was still withdrawing that money from her account. When she tried to cancel it through the bank, they told her that the company the payments were going to would have to cancel it, and that the only way she could stop it was to close her bank account and open a new one.

Of course, there are other ways to get gouged online. As mentioned, you can often find low prices from online outlets - but be sure you figure in the total cost. Some unscrupulous web retailers fail to show you the shipping and handling charges until you get all the way through the payment process and have already input your credit card information. That's like asking you for a blank check; in a few cases, I've seen shipping and handling costs that were four times the price of the item itself.

Something else to be careful about when you're buying online is to find out exactly what you're buying. There are some online camera stores that are notorious for advertising incredibly low prices on popular DSLRs, hundreds of dollars lower than the price of the same item on Amazon or at other legitimate outlets - but there's a catch. Sometimes the camera is a "gray market" import (sometimes euphemistically referred to as "international versions"), which means the manufacturer intended them to be sold in other countries where prices are lower. And what that means to the buyer is that the manufacturer won't honor the warranty, and you may find that the on-screen menus and the manuals are written in a foreign language.

Even if the camera is a "genuine U.S.A. model," some online retailers use another scam. That low, low price they quote, when you read the fine print, is for the body only. At an above-board store, "body only" means the lens doesn't come with it, but most digital camera bodies come with various accessories such as the battery and battery charger. These scammers take that stuff out of the box and charge you extra for it - which in many cases raises their price for the whole package so that it's equal to or higher than that same package from a more honest seller.

The key to protecting yourself from these types of scammers, without passing up the truly good deals that you can find online, is to carefully check out the reputation of any company you're considering doing business with, especially when you're spending hundreds or thousands of dollars for an expensive piece of electronics, jewelry or other high-dollar merchandise.

Get Windows XP's Backup utility to use recordable optical media | Microsoft Windows | TechRepublic.com

Get Windows XP's Backup utility to use recordable optical media | Microsoft Windows | TechRepublic.com
In this workaround, you direct the Backup utility to save the backup file in the CD Burning spool folder. You can then burn the backup to your recordable optical media. Here’s how:

* Launch Backup.
* Select the Backup tab and choose the files that you want to back up.
* Choose File from the Backup Destination drop-down list.
* In the Backup Media or File Name text box, type the following path:

C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\CD Burning\Backup.bkf

Where is the name of your user profile folder and Backup.bkf is the name of the backup file.

As soon as the backup starts, you’ll see a balloon appear in the notification area that alerts you that you have files waiting to be written to the CD. Once the backup is complete, click the balloon to open Windows Explorer and then click the Write These Files To CD command in the CD Writing Tasks section of the task pane.

Note: The only drawback to this technique is that you cannot make Backup span large backup files across multiple CDs. As such, you’ll need to ensure that your backup file will fit on one CD.

Instant NOW

Essay - T. Pitre

Starbucks is coming out with instant coffee. It's called Ready Brew. Kevin Spacey is promoting five minute videos for mobile phone distribution. Twitter.com lets you type in 140 characters so you can tell the world what you're doing right now and my writing coach thought that my poetry might fit into the flash fiction or postcard fiction genre.

What does all this instant involvement and art imply, and what influence or consequences will it have for us in a few years? As it is, our news is fed to us in bites. Sound bites now, visual bites, tomorrow. What is the limit to the minimum size of a piece of electronic media that can still deliver meaningful and comprehensible information?

Writer's enter on-line contests to write a short story in under five hundred words. Folks upload twelve-second videos for the web. The site's motto at 12seconds.tv is “Keeping it pithy since 2008.” Pithy, indeed. There is no story in many of the videos I viewed. They are visual scribbles, usually depicting a baby and a dog, or some woman on vacation blowing a kiss to her sweetheart.

Let's look ahead a few years. Let's look past instant texting on the cell phone, smaller and smaller postings on twitter-like sites, and shorter and shorter videos. Most of this kind of stuff will find its way onto cell phones, and eventually might creep into our television programming. A five minute situation comedy might emerge, along with five minute reality shows and short, educational shows. We will pack twelve times as much programming into each hour of television viewing. This will require more writers, producers, directors and advertisers. Quality be damned. It's quantity and brevity they're after.

Multiple Monitors REDUX

FROM VISTA NEWS

Multiple Monitors Revisited

Looking back through the archives of VistaNews and our sister publication, WXPnews, I was surprised to see that the last time I did a feature on multiple monitor use was in 2007. Wow, time really does fly when you're having fun! That article, titled Screen Real Estate is the Best Investment addressed the question of which works best: one gigantic monitor or several smaller ones:
http://www.vistanews.com/1JN2DV/090226-Screen-Real-Estate

Well, even though the cost of big monitors has come down, there are still advantages (both monetary and ergonomic) to using multiples. And a lot has happened on the multi-monitor front in the last few years. I first started using dual monitors on Windows 2000, but getting them to work could be a major hassle. Most video cards had only a single output, so you had to install additional cards. And you needed video cards that were built to serve as secondary monitors - not all of them were back then. Still, once you got it up and running, it was great. Prior to that, it was possible to have dual monitors with NT, but you had to buy an expensive dual head video card. My secondary cards on my Windows 2000 workstation were cheap Diamond Stealths.

Then XP came out, and multiple monitors got much easier to set up. Unlike Windows 2000, XP would recognize your multiple monitors when you installed it, and extending the desktop across two or even more monitors was no problem at all. For a while there, I was running four monitors off three video cards on my XP system. Next, Vista came along - and along with it, an unpleasant surprise. I'd been using an odd combination of cards with XP: an NVidia with two outputs, an ATI and a Matrox. When I installed Vista on the same machine, only two of my monitors would work: the ones connected to the NVidia card. A little research turned up the fact that with Vista, all of your video cards had to use the same driver. That meant you couldn't mix and match cards from different vendors - although you could in some cases use different models from the same vendor. So I went out and bought another NVidia card for that machine. When I got a new Dell XPS, I got two identical ATI cards.

Now the word is out that Windows 7 will have support for multiple heterogeneous graphics cards from different vendors. I haven't tested that yet (I'm running 7 on the XPS with three monitors attached to the two ATI cards, on a Media Center PC that's hooked up to the 65 inch Sharp Aquos TV, and on a Sony laptop) but I hope to try it out with different brands of cards in the next few weeks. I'll let you know how it goes.

Installing all these extra cards is well and good, but what if you can't do that? Maybe all of the expansion slots on your computer are full. Maybe you use a "desktop replacement" laptop as your primary/only computer. Maybe you just don't feel comfortable opening up the case and adding a card. Does that mean you can't enjoy the benefits of multiple monitors?

Not necessarily. If your expansion slots are full, examine the video card you do have. Most modern video cards have two outputs. Sometimes there will be one VGA D-sub connector and one DVI, or more often now, two DVIs. Newer high-end cards may have an HDMI connector in addition to, or instead of, one of these. Generally you can connect two monitors to the two ports and have multiple monitor functionality.

With most laptops, you can attach a monitor to the video port and have dual monitors of a sort, with the laptops built-in display serving as one of them. That may not be very satisfying if your laptop is a subcompact with a tiny display, though. Another problem is that many laptops currently in use still have only VGA outputs, so if you have a modern monitor that has only a digital input, you may need an adapter and you won't get the full display quality of which the monitor is capable. Some of the newer laptops include HDMI outputs, though. You can connect HDMI to a monitor with a DVI input, again by means of an adapter.

If your computer's existing video card has only one port, or if you're using a laptop and want two or more full sized monitors, there's still a solution - provided you're willing to spend a few bucks. Matrox, which made those dual head monitors for NT way back when, now makes an external device that you can use to connect two or three monitors to your computer. Called the DualHead2Go and the TripleHead2Go, these little black boxes don't require that you open the case and can be had for both analog and digital monitors. They're a bit pricey, though - the dual head analog model sells for around $170 and the digital model for close to $250.

However you accomplish it, being able to spread out across two or three monitors is great. It's like the difference between working on a 3x8 foot desk or table and working on a TV tray.

There was much discussion, ahead of the release of the Windows 7 PDC pre-beta, concerning multi-monitor support for the Windows taskbar. Apparently Microsoft considered making the taskbar capable of spanning multiple monitors, or putting separate taskbars on each monitor. The current public beta, however, doesn't seem to contain that feature.
http://www.vistanews.com/1JN2DV/090226-Multi-Monitor-Support

A great little add-on program that I used in XP and Vista, called UltraMon, provided the capability to have taskbars on each monitor, as well as the ability to set a different wallpaper for each monitor. Unfortunately, it's not yet supported on Windows 7. Some folks have gotten it working - sort of - but you lose some functionality. You can read about the trials and tribulations of those who've tried it here:
http://www.vistanews.com/1JN2DV/090226-Forum

One of the most exciting multiple monitor developments in the last few years was the ability to span multiple monitors with a Remote Desktop connection. I use Remote Desktop a lot, to connect to my primary workstation downstairs from my upstairs office or from my bedroom computer. Previously, you were limited to having the remote desktop on just one screen. Now, I can get a much more realistic working atmosphere by displaying my three-monitor desktop downstairs across all three monitors on the upstairs machine. The default is still to display the remote desktop on a single monitor, however. To span monitors (called continuous resolution mode), you need to type Mstsc /span at the command prompt. Also note that all of the monitors need to be running at the same resolution. To do this from an XP machine to a Vista or Windows 7 computer, you need to install the updated RDC client (6.0) on the XP computer:
http://www.vistanews.com/1JN2DV/090226-Remote-Desktop

You can read more about Microsoft's official stance on multi-monitor support in Vista here:
http://www.vistanews.com/1JN2DV/090226-MultiMonitor

And here is every multiple monitor lover's dream setup: an array consisting of eight 24 inch widescreen displays. At $8000, it's not cheap - but if you can make do with eight 17 inch monitors instead, the price comes down to an almost manageable $2799.
http://www.vistanews.com/1JN2DV/090226-Cinemassive

Or how about one of those transparent touchscreen monitors like they use in the crime lab on CSI: Miami? Apparently that's a SMART Board interactive display projected onto a clear sheet of glass or plastic. SMART Boards have been used in schools since the early 90s, but you know they're expensive when they won't even tell you the price on their web site.
http://www.vistanews.com/1JN2DV/090226-Interactive-Whiteboards

Something that sounds a lot like the CSI dream monitor is Microsoft's SecondLight technology, which was presented this last week at TechFest in Redmond. It's a variation on the Surface computer but instead of embedding the images into a tabletop, it projects them onto a piece of plastic suspended in mid-air. You can see a demo video of that here:
http://www.vistanews.com/1JN2DV/090226-Touch-screen

Are you using multiple monitors yet? Does it make you more productive? How many monitors (and what size) would be in your ideal setup? What's on your wish list for multiple monitor support in the next operating system: multiple taskbars? Separate wallpaper configurations? Tell us your experiences and opinions at feedback@vistanews.com

Clearing The Page File On Shutdown In Windows XP!

Clearing The Page File On Shutdown In Windows XP!
The paging file is used as temporary storage, kind of like RAM only a lot slower. The problem is that information hangs around in the paging file a lot longer than it does in RAM. This can be a security issue if a plain-text password, or any other sensitive information, was stored in the paging file. You can’t clear the paging file while Windows is running but you can clear it on shutdown.
